Secure the Bag: Diagnosing CA Food Security

In California, approximately 10% of households identify as food insecure (with or without hunger) according to America's Health Rankings, but statistics from other sources go up to 20%. Due to the varying estimates, our project seeks to more precisely estimate food security rates using data from the 2017-2019 California Health Interview Survey in combination with various machine learning methods to account for sample bias. We also generated a visual data-driven story to paint a clearer narrative of food security to shed light on the real lived experience of food insecure individuals, a food security status diagnosis quiz, and a resources page to help individuals get better access to food security aid.
