Getting into I School Classes

The School of Information welcomes interest in our Information (INFO) classes from current UC Berkeley graduate, undergraduate, and concurrent enrollment students. Enrollment opportunities depend on available space after I School students have enrolled and on instructor approval. It is also necessary for you to meet all stated prerequisites in the course catalog. Please review the following information below to learn more about enrollment opportunities in our classes.

Note that only classes in our Information (INFO) course schedule are available to students outside the School of Information. Classes in the Data Science (DATASCI) course schedule are restricted to students in the MIDS degree program only. Classes in the Cybersecurity course schedule (CYBER) are restricted to students in the MICS degree program only.

Current UC Berkeley Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate-level courses (numbered 1–199): Sign up using the normal process on CalCentral.

Graduate-level courses (numbered 200–299): Please contact the Student Affairs team at studentaffairs@ischool.berkeley.edu to request a permission code in order to join the waitlist for classes that interest you. Make sure to state your name, student ID number, and the class number, section, and title. Although we aim to respond to you quickly, please allow several business days for a response at peak times such as during the beginning of a semester.

After joining the waitlist, we recommend that you contact the instructor of the course directly by email to briefly introduce yourself and express your interest. Contact information for all our instructors can be found in our class schedule. Waitlisted undergraduate students may be enrolled into available seats after receiving instructor approval, which typically occurs starting during the first week of classes.

Current UC Berkeley Graduate Students

Please submit an enrollment request in CalCentral for all courses that are of interest to you and for which you meet the prerequisites stated in our course catalog and in the Berkeley Academic Guide.

For some classes, you may be able to enroll directly; for other classes, CalCentral will push you to join the waitlist. If you join a waitlist, we recommend that you contact the instructor of the course directly by email to briefly introduce yourself and express your interest. Contact information for all our instructors can be found in our class schedule. Waitlisted graduate students will be enrolled into available seats after receiving instructor approval, which typically occurs starting during the first week of classes.

Community Members (non–UC Berkeley Students)

Summer Sessions

Berkeley Summer Sessions enrollment is open to everyone. Community members are welcome to sign up for summer Information (INFO) courses; contact the Berkeley Summer Sessions office for more information. Note that only classes in our summer Information (INFO) course schedule are available to community members. Summer Data Science (DATASCI) courses are restricted to students in the MIDS degree program only and summer Cybersecurity courses (CYBER) are restricted to students in the MICS degree program only.

Fall and Spring Semesters

Concurrent enrollment is a program for the general public to enroll in UC Berkeley campus courses without being formally admitted to the University. Community members, including U.S. students and international students at other universities, can enroll in some Information courses via concurrent enrollment at UC Berkeley Extension. The School of Information does not provide sponsorship for individual international concurrent enrollment students, unless we have an existing agreement with the student’s host university. We recommend that individual international concurrent enrollment students apply to Berkeley Global Access Programs.

Please submit an enrollment request via the UC Berkeley Extension concurrent enrollment process for all courses that are of interest to you and for which you believe you meet the prerequisites or equivalents.

Your enrollment request requires one approval from department staff and one from the faculty instructor of record for the course. Department staff will approve within 2-3 business days to confirm there is available space in the class. We recommend that you contact the instructor of the course directly by email to briefly introduce yourself and express your interest. It is then up to the instructor to approve or deny your request directly online. Contact information for all our instructors can be found in our class schedule.

If you experience any delays or have questions about concurrent enrollment at the I School, please contact us at studentaffairs@ischool.berkeley.edu.
