Comparing Physiological and Psychological Responses of Playing Roblox in Mobile and Virtual Reality Environments
As the Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (XR) market is rapidly growing, gaming companies are developing strategies to be part of this growth. One straightforward strategy is to extend current flat screen experience into VR, as it was done by Roblox. But how VR and flat screen experiences relate to each other? Using the unique opportunity of continuous gaming experience provided by Roblox both in the Mobile and VR settings, this pilot study elicits physiological and psychological responses of 6 participants. Preliminary results did not find significant difference in Heart Rate and EDA levels in Mobile and VR gaming on aggregate, while there were significant mixed EDA responses on individual levels. On Psychological level, participants self-reported slightly higher Arousal and higher Valence in experiencing VR games. While current study is statistically underpowered, a more detailed study could be dedicated to untangling individual level EDA differences in those two game settings.
