Healthy Eating for New Moms

Team members:

There are approximately 4 million pregnant or lactating women each year who must start their dietary journey of eating for two. Around 10% of these mothers experience nutrition deficiency during these periods, according to academic research. Nutrition deficiency is risky to both the mother and the baby.  Adding supplements can also have unwelcome side effects. We developed a Web application to help new moms and moms-to-be with an on-demand and informative nutrition recipe recommender.

We applied Natural Language Processing methods (such as cosine similarity and Named Entity Recognition models) to the recipes, ingredients and used nutrition facts metadata (obtained from sources such as the USDA).  We recommend recipes from allrecipes.com and provide nutritional guidance as to ingredients that could best meet the user’s personal nutrition needs during their pregnancy or lactating period. We incorporate professional knowledge regarding Women-health and Nutrition (from ACOG, Mayo clinic, and the National Institute of Health) into our algorithm and application to help the new moms to understand their nutrition needs.

We hope our web application will ease the job of cooking and nutrition intake management for new moms and moms to be, making healthy recipe exploration fun and informative!
