5th Year MIDS Open House

Come join us in South Hall to get a first-hand look into life as a 5th Year MIDS student, and to experience our very special I School culture and community! The evening will feature presentations from I School faculty, staff, current 5th Year MIDS students, and MIDS alumni. We will share information about application requirements, career paths, student experience, curriculum, and more! Finally, there will be plenty of time to chat with and get your specific questions answered by current 5th Year MIDS students, MIDS alumni, faculty, and staff. And, pizza will be served. The evening is sure to be fun and informative!

Panelists

Sharon Lin, MIDS '15, is the Director of Creator Analytics at Twitch, a live streaming video platform. At Twitch, she leads the analytics team to build and provide business intelligence solutions and strategic insights for the Creator GTM and product teams. Previously, she worked as a Staff Data Scientist at Okta, a cloud security and identity management company based in San Francisco. At Okta, she worked on building data analytics on products and lead the efforts in developing predictive analytics solutions.

Haerang Lee is a current MIDS student. She graduated from UC Berkeley with an undergraduate degree in Economics and Business Administration. With a background in fraud investigations, she leads the data analytics team in Uber Internal Audit, helping Uber intelligently manage financial and regulatory risks. She is currently a teaching assistant for MIDS course, Python Fundamentals for Data Science. 

Nitin Kohli, MIDS '15, is a Ph.D. student at the School of Information researching topics that span privacy, security, and fairness. Prior to his Ph.D., he worked both as a data scientist in industry and as an academic. Within industry, he developed machine learning and natural language processing algorithms to identify occurrences and locations of future risk in healthcare settings. Within academia, he worked as an adjunct instructor and lecturer at UC Berkeley, teaching both introductory and advanced courses in elementary mathematics, probability, statistics, and game theory. Nitin has also received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Statistics from UC Berkeley, where he received departmental honors in statistics for his work in stochastic modeling and game theory.

Gurdit Chahal is a current MIDS student. He graduated from UC Berkeley with an undergraduate degree in Applied Mathematics and Physics in 2015. He started his career in data science as an analyst in healthcare at LeanTaaS and worked his way up to the position of Data Scientist in 2017. Currently, he is a Data Scientist at JLL and a teaching assistant for MIDS course, Statistics for Data Science. 

Michael Steckler is a current 5th Year MIDS student. He graduated with an Economics BA and Public Policy minor in May 2019. Interestingly enough, his past internship as a Brokerage Intern for WG&S LLP stimulated his interest in cyber-related issues. Motivated to learn more about information systems and cybersecurity, he secured a Student Assistant job at UC Berkeley’s Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC) that led him to apply for the 5th Year MIDS. This past summer, he was a Cybersecurity Fellow with the City & County of San Francisco’s Committee on Information Technology (COIT).
