Democracy and Dictatorship

The Democracy and Dictatorship visualization website is designed to help students and teachers explore the evolving political structures of modern regimes. It provides tools to examine the political systems of all self-governing bodies from 1950 to 2020, offering both high-level overviews and detailed analyses of selected regimes.

To enhance understanding of political trends, especially in relation to geographic context, the platform features a dual-part visualization. The first component tracks changes across six major regime types: royal dictatorship, military dictatorship, civilian dictatorship, parliamentary democracy, presidential democracy, and mixed democracy. The second component visualizes the spatial development of suffrage and multiparty systems over time.
