Serpents & Primitives: An Ethnographic Excursion into an Open Source Community

Much of the hype surrounding Open Source projects valorizes the distributed and egalitarian nature of these technical communities. My ethnography of the Python programming community shows that this Open Source community is indeed distributed but hierarchical, therefore challenging Eric Raymond's trope of Open Source communities as frenzied bazaars of software production.
