Biography

Richard Robbins was the Director of Knowledge Management at Sidley Austin LLP until September 2021.  He established the firm’s Knowledge Management Department and is a member of a group of people who identify, assess, and, when appropriate, introduce innovative technology to the firm.  He serves as a bridge to the global legal knowledge management and artificial intelligence communities.  A frequent public speaker, in recent years, he has focused on sophisticated, data-driven enterprise search platforms, the use of natural language processing with an emphasis on entity extraction, and data visualization.

Before assuming his position with Sidley in 2016, he was the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Morningstar, Inc.  Before joining Morningstar in 2005, he was a partner at Sidley.  Previously, he was an associate in the firm’s Corporate and Securities practice.  Before attending law school, he worked for Digital Equipment Corporation as a Senior Software Engineer in its Artificial Intelligence Technology Center.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, each from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Juris Doctor Degree with Honors from The University of Chicago Law School.
