Biography

Teaching statistics, machine learning, and advanced topics in various data science domains is a hobby and a passion, though I started my career as a tenure-track professor of economics. Besides teaching at Cal, I work at Walmart Global Technology, formerly known as WalmartLabs, where I am the VP of data science, engineering, and platform with a dozen teams of data scientists, data engineers, and software engineers. Before joining Walmart, I was the Chief Data Scientist and Global Head of Data Science at AllianceBernstein, a global investment management and research firm that managed over $550 billions in asset. Prior to AllianceBernstein, I was a VP and the Head of Data Science at Silicon Valley Data Science, a boutique data science / engineering consulting firm, where I led a team of Ph.D. computer scientists, statisticians, and other scientists helping global companies transformed their businesses using advanced data science techniques and modern data technology. SVDS was eventually acquired by Apple. Prior to SVDS, I held various quantitative research and modeling leadership positions, including the Head of Quantitative Research and Risk Analytics at Charles Schwab Corporation, Director of Risk Consulting at KPMG, and Assistant Director at Moody's Analytics. Beside Berkeley, I have taught economics, econometrics, machine learning, and statistics at University of Pennsylvania, Cornell Tech, NYU, and Virginia Tech. I am also frequently invited to speak at national and international data science, technology, and other technology leadersship conferences. I am an applied econometrician by training, with a Ph.D. and M.A. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.S. in mathematics and economics from UCLA.
