MSCA Fellowship Brings Berkeley Researcher to TU Dublin for Pioneering AI Ethics Project

Dr. Elizabeth Resor, a recent doctoral graduate from the UC Berkeley School of Information, has been awarded the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Horizon Europe Postdoctoral Fellowship.

The fully funded fellowship aims to promote scientific excellence and strengthen global collaboration, bringing top-tier international researchers to academic institutions in the EU from Australia, the USA, and the UK to TU Dublin. This initiative not only enhances the university's research ecosystem but also fosters innovation through diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches.

Dr. Resor will be based at the Technological University (TU) Dublin. During her time at TU Dublin, Dr. Resor will be advised by Dr. P.J. Wall, Head of Research & Innovation in the Faculty of Business and Director of the Center for Sustainable Technology & Digital Innovation.

She will explore the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence (AI) in global development. The project will examine ethical challenges through a case study of the AI Cookstoves Project, a collaboration between TU Dublin's ADAPT Centre and Makerere University in Uganda. “I’m so excited to return to my interests in global development and East Africa, after the pandemic prevented me from focusing on these for my dissertation,” Elizabeth tells us.

The AI Cookstoves Project uses AI-generated design solutions to enhance the efficiency of wood-burning cookstoves, which are commonly used in developing countries. Dr. Resor will assess the trade-offs between energy savings and the environmental impact of running AI models while investigating how AI influences knowledge hierarchies and power dynamics among stakeholders. This research aims to support inclusive economic growth and reduce inequality by informing policy makers with real-world insights into AI ethics frameworks.
