I School Launches Certificate in Applied Data Science

Beginning in the Fall of 2019, UC Berkeley graduate students may apply to earn a Graduate Certificate in Applied Data Science from the UC Berkeley School of Information.

The certificate requires three 3-unit courses and is designed to complement a student’s regular degree program. Upon graduation, a student who completes the certificate will be issued a certificate in addition to a diploma, and completion of the certificate program will be noted on the official transcript.

The need for expertise in data analytics continues to grow in all organizations and disciplines. The Graduate Certificate in Applied Data Science introduces the tools, methods, and conceptual approaches used to support modern data analysis and decision-making in professional and applied research settings.

“We are thrilled to offer this pathway to data science to a broad range of graduate students at UC Berkeley.”
— Professor John Chuang, Head of School

“We are thrilled to offer this pathway to data science to a broad range of graduate students at UC Berkeley,” said Professor John Chuang, Head of School. “We are grateful for the close collaboration of many faculty colleagues across campus to help us define and build this certificate program that serves the graduate students in our professional schools as well as in the social sciences and the arts and humanities.”

This Option 2 Certificate, which trains students to become intelligent analysts of data within the applied contexts of their individual domains, is particularly designed to meet the needs of graduate students in Berkeley’s professional schools, including both professional master’s students and doctoral students, as well as graduate students in the Social Sciences and the Arts and Humanities. Students will be exposed to the challenges of working with data, such as formulating good questions, inference and causality, and decision-making, as well as to the new tools and techniques for data analytics, such as machine learning and data mining.

“We’re excited to introduce a wider variety of students to these cutting-edge techniques and tools,” said Catherine Cronquist Browning, Assistant Dean of Academic Programs, “and to see their innovative applications for data science in their own fields.”

UC Berkeley graduate students can sign up to be notified when the application is open. Students may apply at any time during their UC Berkeley graduate career, either before or after taking courses that would count toward the certificate.
