Technology, Information, and Education Seminar

Technology Enhanced Learning in Science (TELS)

Thursday, November 18, 2010
4:00 pm to 5:30 pm
Dr. Vanessa Svihla, Beat Schwendimann, and Jonathan Breitbart

This presentation will include demonstrations of the UC Berkeley Web-based Inquiry Science Environment (WISE), with a discussion of the design process, implementation challenges, and current research findings.

The UC Berkeley Web-based Inquiry Science Environment (WISE) research group, led by Prof. Marcia Linn, is a pioneer in technology-enhanced science learning. WISE is a free, NSF-funded learning environment that structures inquiry activities with interactive visualizations. The WISE learning environment has been developed by an interdisciplinary team of educators, teachers, scientists, psychologists, and computer scientists.

Relying on design principles and partnerships, WISE curricula support students in developing an integrated understanding of science. For teachers, WISE offers informative feedback about student learning, classroom discussion tools, and an authoring environment for project customization. For researchers, WISE records students' responses and logs interactions.

The Technology, Information, and Education Seminar Series is sponsored by the School of Information and the Center for Next Generation Teaching and Learning.

The monthly seminars provide a platform for the exchange of research ideas, experiences, and approaches about the use of technology in education; build linkages among campus groups and off-campus groups; and present opportunities to partner and study technology use in education.
