Small Media Initiative

Friday, October 15, 2010
4:00 pm to 5:30 pm
Mahmood Enayat

Since the disputed June 2009 presidential election and the events that followed in Iran, the Internet has been the primary media space available to the dissidents and activists inside Iran. However the Internet's reach in Iran is limited, and there is a need to go beyond the common perception and prescribed use of the Internet and come up with new and innovative solutions. In the past 14 months, Mamood Enayat has been involved running a number of "Small Media Initiatives" to improve the flow of information inside Iran. Enayat will talk about his experiences and the conceptual framework behind small media, and will solicit feedback to improve the framework and his work.

Mahmood Enayat is a doctoral student at the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University, where he studies state censorship and control of the Internet, online political discourse, and collective action in Persian cyberspace. He worked previously with the BBC World Service Trust, where he was responsible for managing the trust's Iran media development program.
