System Administrator

The I School is currently seeking an experienced Linux System Administrator to join its IT team.

Working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, this team supports a community of scholars from such diverse fields as information and computer science, design, social sciences, management, law, and policy. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Information Technology, the System Administrator will have primary responsibility for managing the school’s Linux-based systems and will engage directly with faculty, staff, and students to ensure that the school’s services meet their wide-ranging information technology needs. Along with other team members, the System Administrator will help shape the school’s technology strategy so that its IT services continue to address the challenges of educating information professionals and conducting world-class research in such rapidly-evolving fields as cybersecurity, data science, and information management.

Responsibilities

30% – Specifies, builds, and maintains systems and services, both on-premise and in the public cloud.

10% – Monitors system performance and troubleshoots problems as they arise.

10% – Oversees system security to safeguard data confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

10% – Creates and manages user accounts and manages access to systems and services.

10% – Automates routine tasks through the use of configuration management tools, scripting, etc.

10% – Consults with faculty, staff, and students to develop solutions meeting their information technology needs.

10% – Creates and maintains documentation of systems and services.

10% – Performs other duties as assigned, including support of end-point devices, AV systems, etc.

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge, skill, and experience with Linux system administration.

  • Experience managing container orchestration platforms (such as Kubernetes).

  • Experience using configuration management tools (such as Ansible or Puppet).

  • Experience working in DevOps environments.

  • Working knowledge of local and wide area networking technologies.

  • Ability to write small programs in a scripting language (Shell, Python, Perl, etc.)

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to interact productively with a wide variety of stakeholders and clients.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage a significant number of tasks in a timely manner.

  • Background check required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

This is a designated position requiring fingerprinting and a background check due to the nature of the job responsibilities. The salary range designated for this position: $75,400 – $110,800; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
