Marketing and Communications Specialist

As a core member of the Berkeley I School communications and external relations team, the Marketing and Communications Specialist helps tell the story that drives the I School’s critical mission and creates communications and marketing content that aligns with the School’s communication strategies and targets key audiences including prospective and current graduate students, donors, alumni, faculty, and prospective faculty and staff. The Marketing & Communications Specialist will use marketing concepts to plan, develop, and implement promotional materials and position the I School through its social media and other channels for the benefit of reputation, recruitment, and revenue.
The Marketing & Communications Specialist must be adept at quickly and accurately writing up news articles, coordinating with faculty and researchers on promoting different activities, and producing features and profiles of various community members. They are responsible for close monitoring of social media conversations, regular analysis of and reporting on key performance indicator (KPI) data; optimizing organic and user-generated content; and collaborating with constituents across the I School to develop targeted marketing campaigns that align with institutional goals and directives.The Communications Specialist may also work on marketing events as needed.
The Marketing & Communications Specialist is also key to the success of external events and must be highly organized and detail-oriented, and able to create and deliver targeted communications plans and strategies.
50% — Social Media Management
Under minimal supervision, executes long- and short-term strategic planning of all social media content for Berkeley I School’s official channels in accordance with the overall communications strategy set by the Director of Communications Independently oversees and executes daily social media schedule, content, and activity, as well as regular analysis of performance (KPI) data.
- Closely monitors all social media channels and responds to messages as appropriate.
- Alerts Communications Director of news relating to the I School or potential issues in a timely manner.
- Promotes articles/news/scholarship to key audiences.
- Writes copy tailored to the individual social channel utilizing relevant handles and hashtags to increase visibility.
- Produces regular reports on campaign performance using data analytics tools.
- Promotes events and other priority materials in accordance with the communications strategy.
- Independently develops visual assets for social, web, and print uses, with the support of student interns.
- Video: Occasionally conceives, plans, and manages the production of video content (from preproduction to filming/interviewing to editing and post-production work for use on social media, website, and YouTube., with the support of student interns.
- Helps supervise student interns in general communication support, graphic design, and publicity activities.
30% — Writing and Editorial
Under the direction of the Communications Director, writes, researches, and edits material for news articles on research findings, awards, programs, and people at the I School for internal and external audiences.
- Drafts or edits copy for marketing projects or programs such as publications, advertisements, press releases, announcements, etc.
- As an editor, ensures clarity, organization, accuracy, style, and quality of written work.
- Conducts interviews with I School faculty, students, and friends for articles and featured profiles.
- Provides guidance to I School community members on writing blogs for I School publications or op-eds for external sources.
- Under limited supervision, determines the best medium and publication plan for different types of news.
- Responsible for communicating complex scientific research to a wide audience (i.e., prospective students, UC Berkeley community, I School alumni, and friends), including both scientifically savvy and lay audiences.
- Creates editorial content for a variety of media, including newsletters, web copy, fliers, and brochures.
15% — Event Outreach and Communications
- Manages promotion of I School events for internal and external audiences, including invitations, newsletters, and social media outreach.
- Actively seeks out gap areas in outreach and initiates, develops and implements programs, events and/or communication strategies designed to inform external constituencies of institutional programs, activities, policies, and practices; constituencies may include the general public, prospective students, parents, donors, campus visitors, government, industry, and/or community representatives.
- Creates media toolkits to facilitate sharing of events by different stakeholders.
- Manages data and contact lists associated with events.
- Attends important events such as Commencements, Orientation, and other community events. May be responsible for event photography, live social media coverage, and other event support.
5% — Professional Development
- Add to existing marketing, communications, and events skill set through participation in staff organizations, professional organizations, workshops, conferences, training, and other educational or networking opportunities.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite applications, and video conferencing platforms with the ability to learn new computer programs and software systems.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn campus protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
- Ability to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to target and/or broad general audiences.
- Skill to maintain confidentiality.
- Thorough attention to detail, project management, and organizational skills.
- Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
- Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.
- Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging, and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and/or the broader public while ensuring adherence to the I School brand and voice.

- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- 3 years+ experience in communications, public relations, journalism or closely related professional communication role with progressive independence.
- A portfolio of successful communication products that demonstrate the ability to translate organization branding and priorities into structured, strategically aligned content.
- Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and other web communication capabilities.
- Experience working in higher education, or with a research or scientific organization.

The hourly salary range designated for this position is $27.06 – $35.78; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
This is an in-person position located on campus at the University of California, Berkeley. This role is eligible for a hybrid work plan with ~40% remote work eligibility, and requires occasional evening and weekend work, as needed.

About the School of Information
The School of Information (I School) advances knowledge and practice everywhere humans interact with digital technologies. Through interdisciplinary research and teaching we are committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility while preserving security and privacy. Our faculty conduct research in human-computer interaction (HCI), security and privacy, applied data science, and technology in developing regions.
We currently offer three professional master’s degrees and an academic doctoral degree. Our Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) program trains students for careers as information professionals and emphasizes project-based learning. Our Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) program is an online degree designed for working professionals with career goals in the emerging field of data science.
