Data Science Program Academic Co-Director

The I School is currently seeking an Academic Co-Director for the fully online Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) program.

The co-director shares a portfolio of responsibilities with a peer Co-Director in order to support this rapidly-scaling program. Together the Co-Directors help lead and shape the academic content of the MIDS program, with a particular emphasis on recruiting and hiring talented and diverse lecturers and postdoctoral scholars; working closely with professors in residence and adjunct faculty members; establishing quality control processes for all course offerings; ensuring that the curriculum offerings adapt to changes in the industry; and working with the Head of School and the Assistant Dean of Academic Programs, Equity, & Inclusion to continue expanding MIDS as part of the I School’s overall growth strategy. The Co-Director also oversees instruction in the 5th Year MIDS program pathway, which serves recent UC Berkeley undergraduates interested in Data Science careers.

This role is designed for 100% remote work although occasional attendance at major in-person events such as commencement in Berkeley is highly desirable.


  • 35% — Develop and manage processes for the recruitment, onboarding and retention of postdoctoral scholars and lecturers, and collaborate with ladder and adjunct faculty members, to develop and teach MIDS courses. Contribute to managing an ongoing faculty development program focused on online teaching practices and the use of educational technologies.

  • 25% — Provide leadership and oversight for existing MIDS program with focus on high quality student experience and leading edge curriculum. Ensure that our program vendor, 2U, provides a high level of service.

  • 20% — Manage collaborative course design and development processes, engaging with our partner 2U and supporting faculty to create new high quality online courses. Collaborate with faculty to define learning objectives, interactions and activities to enhance online course offerings.

  • 10% — Implement and maintain online course and curriculum quality review processes focused on student outcomes and aligned with I School goals and accreditation requirements.

  • 10% — Collaborate with Student Affairs to assess program's effectiveness and recommend changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and experience working in data science or closely related field (Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Information management, Analytics, etc.)
  • Experience providing management and oversight for multi-stakeholder organizations
  • Demonstrated project and team management skills.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Bachelor's degree in data science or closely-related field, plus 4+ years relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in higher education (especially in course design, development, and quality improvement) strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience and history of planning, designing, developing, implementing, managing and growing technology-based learning programs in either academic or professional settings desired.
  • Graduate degree in data science or closely-related field.

About the School of Information

The School of Information (I School) advances knowledge and practice everywhere humans interact with digital technologies. Through interdisciplinary research and teaching we are committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility while preserving security and privacy. Our faculty conduct research in human-computer interaction (HCI), security and privacy, applied data science, and technology in developing regions.

We currently offer three professional master's degrees and an academic doctoral degree. Our Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) program trains students for careers as information professionals and emphasizes project-based learning. Our Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) program is an online degree designed for working professionals with career goals in the emerging field of data science.
