Salary:
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Annual salary range: $49,284 (minimum); $70,752 (midpoint); $92,208 (maximum).
Description:
The School of Information Webmaster has primary responsibility for managing the School’s websites. Using sound design principles and state-of-the-art technology, the Webmaster creates and maintains websites that are inviting, informative, and easy to use. The Webmaster ensures that the School's websites meet the needs of their audiences, effectively communicating timely and accurate information to faculty, staff, current students, prospective students, alumni, partners, and the public.
The Webmaster plays a key role in developing and refining the visual design, taxonomy, navigation, and features of the school’s websites. Using a content management system (CMS), the Webmaster collaborates with authors to produce content and edits authors’ work to ensure accuracy, readability, and conformance with relevant style guides and standards. The Webmaster continually seeks innovative ways to present information, make the websites more engaging, and foster information sharing and collaboration within the I School community.
Responsibilities:
Website Development
- Work with clients to conduct needs assessment and develop functional specifications for new websites and web-based applications
- Develop taxonomies to organize website content
- Create visual designs using appropriate tools and standards (e.g., HTML, CSS) and integrate these into the template framework of the content management system (CMS)
- Create web graphics as needed using appropriate tools (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator)
- Conduct usability studies of new designs to ensure ease of use
- Conduct tests to ensure that websites and web-based applications meet functional specifications
- Test website designs to ensure compatibility with commonly used browsers as well as appropriate Web and accessibility standards
- Work with I School system administrators to specify and install web server technologies
- Develop online forms using appropriate tools (e.g., HTML, Adobe Acrobat)
- Coordinate with faculty, staff, and I School management team for content and design review and approval
Website Maintenance
- Develop and implement a publishing plan, including an editorial review process to ensure accuracy and consistency of content and a publication schedule to ensure timely delivery of information
- Work with content authors to create, gather, and edit content for the school’s websites using the CMS
- Work with I School system administrators to identify website and server problems and resolve these with minimal disruption to users
- Work with I School system administrators to track and analyze website usage statistics
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Expert knowledge of web standards and technologies
- Thorough understanding of website design principles and practices
- Thorough understanding of content management principles and practices
- Knowledge and understanding of the teaching and research environment in a major university preferred
- Four-year college degree preferred
Specific Skills:
- Excellent writing and editing skills
- Excellent website design and maintenance skills, using common web standards and technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, XML, XSL, Javascript, PHP, Photoshop, Acrobat, web browsers and other web applications or systems as needed)
