Current Research

Professor Tygar examines issues in computer security, privacy, electronic commerce, and related policy areas. His recent research has included recovering keystrokes from a recording of a user typing at a computer keyboard, creating techniques for securing sensor nodes (described in part in his book Secure Broadcast Communication with Adrian Perrig), developing powerful anti-phishing techniques, exploring the usability of computer security systems, and examining systems for protecting privacy in government database systems. Professor Tygar has previously helped developed a number of important electronic commerce systems, including the US Postal Service's Information Based Indicia (cryptographically protectred 2-D bar codes used for postage) and the NetBill system. Other Activities

Professor Tygar is the Head Graduate Advisor for the Ph.D. program in Information Management.  Professor Tygar is an active Investigator in the TRUST Center at UC Berkeley and leads the Privacy and Forensic Techniques thrusts of the project.

Biography

Doug Tygar works in the areas of electronic commerce and computer security. He helped design cryptographic indicia for the US Postal Service and built a major micropayments system called NetBill. He is a founder of the ACM Special Interest Group in Electronic Commerce. Doug Tygar investigates a wide array of problems ranging from applications of trusted hardware to micro-auctions to rights management.
