Biography

I have been working in computer networking for a long time, starting with my Ph.D. in computer networking from ETH Zürich. Publishing the worldwide first book about the technical foundations of the Web during my post-doc year at ICSI, my interest switched to Web technologies and Web architecture, and this is the field that I have been working in since 1997.

I joined the UC Berkeley School of Information from 2006 to 2011, shifting my focus from structured data to Web services in general, Web-oriented architectures for mobile and/or location-oriented services. We have applied these architectural principles to areas as diverse as open e-government data and personalized location-based services.

In 2011, I joined EMC's Information Intelligence Group (IIG), where I was working on how to transform the existing and future product portfolio to a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), based on Web Architecture and REST. As part of my work for EMC, I was serving as co-chair of the W3C's Linked Data Platform (LDP) Working Group.
