School of Information Kicks Off Its First Fully Online Course

This fall, the School of Information launches its first fully online course: Info W10. Introduction to Information.

Info W10 is an interdisciplinary course, with elements of computer science, sociology, economics, law, and communication.

The course includes lectures from at least ten different I School faculty — experts in fields like online networking, web security, human-computer interaction, user interface design, technology and poverty, law and policy, business models, and entrepreneurship — led by assistant professor Brian Carver.

Lectures are pre-recorded and can be viewed on the students’ own schedule, but discussion sections meet online at assigned times; in the discussion sections, students will interact live with their TAs and fellow students.

The course was developed as part of the University of California’s Online Instruction Pilot Project, an initiative to develop new, fully web-based courses at the university’s nine undergraduate campuses. The initiative is offering four fully online courses at Berkeley this fall, in addition to fourteen courses on other UC campuses. More information about UC Online can be found at cole.uconline.edu.

In Fall 2012, Info W10 will be open only to regularly-enrolled UC Berkeley students.
