Social Innovation Hackathon
“Hack for a Cause”
The 2nd annual Social Innovation Hackathon is partnering with Heifer International for a day of hacking in support of their mission: “to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.”
The hackathon and Heifer International will present a set of well-defined challenge statements to maximize information availability and the impact that a 24-hour event can have. Participants will have access to subject-matter experts, real datasets, in addition to the basics: Wi-fi, meals, snacks, caffeine, a dedicated nap room, etc.
Everyone is invited to register. Participation is free with a valid student ID!

Hackathon Partner: Heifer International
Heifer International’s mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.
Heifer links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Their animals provide partners with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market.
The core of their model is Passing on the Gift. This means families share the training they receive, and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family. This extends the impact of the original gift, allowing a once-impoverished family to become donors and full participants in improving their communities.
Heifer International will announce the hackathon challenge statements on Friday, November 21, 2014 at 6pm.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best way to get to Berkeley and South Hall?
We would highly recommend taking the Bart to Berkeley. Parking (especially overnight) can be difficult to find and pricey. More information, directions, and maps.
Will meals be provided?
We will provide dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, and snacks & beverages throughout the Hackathon!
What kinds of problem statements will we be hacking for?
Heifer has collected problem statements from projects around the world. We will reveal the final challenges on Friday, but problem statements range from creating interactive information visualizations of social activities to building mobile apps for rural stakeholders.
Will there be any accommodations for sleeping, since it’s an overnight Hackathon?
We will be reserving a “quiet room” if you want to take a nap or catch some sleep while you’re hacking. Please bring your own sleeping bags/pillows/blankets!
What if I don’t have a team?
That’s fine! You will have a chance to chat with other participants and form teams once you arrive.
What happens to the project code we create?
All code created during the event will be released under an OSI approved open source license and released in a public code repository.
