Totem

Totem is an intuitive cybersecurity hardware device that detects spyware and communicates results using simple indicator lights. Designed to make complex threat detection on a mobile device effortless for anyone, Totem takes the guesswork out of digital safety.

As of mid‑2025, there are about 7.2 billion smartphones in circulation—nearly as many devices as people on the planet. Globally, around 70% of these run Android, with approximately 5 billion being active Android phones. Of those, about 3 billion are full-featured Android smartphones susceptible to commercial and state-sponsored spyware. On June 30, 2025, U.S. Congress formally criticized the FBI for failing to provide government officials and diplomats with effective cybersecurity guidance and tools to tackle spyware targeting mobile phones. The congressional letter emphasized that existing techniques to detect spyware are inadequate, leaving high-risk individuals vulnerable and undermining public confidence.

In response to the rising threat of mobile spyware, our team has developed Totem, a pocket-sized, air-gapped hardware device designed to empower everyday users to detect known spyware signatures on their Android phones without overwhelming logs or technical jargon. Totem combines existing hardware and software tools streamlined into a single, intuitive package: users simply connect it, and a light indicator shows whether spyware is present or not. This approach brings government-grade mobile threat detection into everyone’s hands, removing guesswork and cognitive load.
