Cyberguardian....Not a Wall, but a Guardian

CyberGuardian

Kids today spend more time online than ever, and the risks are real. One in three elementary-aged children have already experienced something online that made them feel uncomfortable, to include things such as grooming, sextortion, and inappropriate content. That’s where CyberGuardian comes in. CyberGuardian is a Chrome extension that helps students build safe online habits through real‑time, interactive prompts. Traditional filters only block websites, but CyberGuardian goes further. It uses lightweight, on‑device AI to spot risks such as cyberbullying, oversharing personal information, or exposure to harmful content, and immediately alerts the child with a supportive pop-up.

Unlike traditional filters, CyberGuardian educates kids to make smarter choices on their own, while still giving trusted adults the insight to step in if needed. When a risk is detected, it doesn’t just shut things down, it introduces Pixel: an interactive AI guide who encourages students to pause, reflect, and make a safer choice. These teachable moments help children build digital resilience, not dependence.

On the educator side, CyberGuardian provides a secure dashboard that displays anonymized alert trends. This helps teachers and counselors see whether students resolved issues independently or needed support, without compromising privacy.

Privacy is at the heart of CyberGuardian. All processing happens locally on the Chromebook, with zero data sent to the cloud. It’s fully aligned with COPPA and GDPR standards and built with a secure‑by‑design approach using STRIDE modeling, local encryption, and WebAssembly sandboxes. Furthermore, spoofing protection (including domain and origin checks) ensures that all alerts are authentic.

We can't just block the internet. Our kids need it. But we can't stand over their shoulder for eight hours a day, either. We need a different approach. Not a wall, but a guardian. A digital companion that helps kids grow more confident and aware as they explore the internet. It empowers young minds to navigate safely while giving educators and parents peace of mind.
