School of Information Legacy Campaign
The School of Information Legacy Campaign is a multi-year fundraising campaign designed to raise capital for the preservation of UC Berkeley's oldest academic building while investing in spaces that support innovation, collaboration, and the future growth of the School.
Celebrating the First Century. Launching the Next.
In 2026, the School of Information celebrates its 100th anniversary as a School. Established as the School of Librarianship in 1926, today the School of Information has nearly 10,000 alumni and dozens of faculty members who have innovatively designed, built, analyzed, and critically evaluated information systems that shape the way humans live and interact with the world and one another.
As we look toward the next 100 years, we are taking the essential steps to meet the growing needs of our students, faculty, and staff within our physical space. The School of Information’s Legacy Campaign includes three key philanthropic initiatives:
Legacy Exhibition
Celebrate the I School’s history and evolving legacy through a public legacy exhibition.
The Legacy Exhibition will create a living experience that explores more than a century of Berkeley's leadership at the intersection of information, technology, and society, examining how evolving ideas about knowledge, access to information, innovation, and technology have shaped democratic institutions, civic life, and the public good.
Historic Preservation and Restoration
Establish sustained funding for the historic preservation and restoration of our historic home at South Hall.
As the oldest building on the UC Berkeley campus, South Hall is a rare architectural treasure, one of the few surviving examples on the West Coast of a 19th-century European style that once shaped American academic spaces. Sustained support will ensure that South Hall remains not only a symbol of Berkeley’s origins but also a living, functional space that inspires generations of scholars to connect, innovate, and lead in an ever-changing world.
Physical Expansion and Modernization
Secure capital for the physical expansion and modernization of the school with the construction of an annex.
As the School continues to expand its impact at the intersections of technology, society, and human experience, its physical space will need to evolve in step with its intellectual ambition. A proposed annex represents an aspirational step toward supporting this growth — envisioning a flexible, state-of-the-art environment where students, faculty, and partners can collaborate across disciplines, explore emerging challenges, and design the information systems that will shape how people live and interact in the future.
