February 17 marks the Lunar New Year holiday, celebrated in many Asian cultures. Lunar New Year 2026 welcomes the Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of energy, optimism, and new beginnings. The holiday is a time for renewal, family gatherings, and hopeful beginnings. It is usually commemorated with festive meals, firecrackers, red decorations, and wishes for good fortune in the year ahead.

Students, faculty, and staff: if you celebrate lunar new year — or even if you don't — and you'd like to share input and/or participate in any way, big or small, in planning a Lunar New Year celebration for the February MMM please reach out to Siu Yung at siu@ischool.berkeley.edu. We welcome your ideas and involvement!
