Towards Inclusive Tech springs from a sense of urgency about our limited success in diversifying the technology industry. We seek to engage a robust dialogue between researchers and practitioners about how to build more inclusive technical education and workplaces — and to inspire a new generation of scholarship and practice in the area. The conference, co-sponsored by UC Berkeley’s School of Information and the Center for Gender, Equity, and Leadership (CGEL) at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, brings together leaders from the business, non-profit and academic communities to identify the most promising research and business and educational practices that will support our commitments to greater diversity and inclusion.

Towards Inclusive Tech aims to move the conversation about diversity and inclusion beyond a now familiar set of issues. We want researchers to share what interventions show the most promise after rigorous evaluation. We will encourage practitioners to share the techniques and areas of inquiry that they find most promising. Over a day and a half, we seek to reframe the debates about the role of women and other underrepresented groups in technology industry. Ultimately, the goal of the Towards Inclusive Tech conference is to construct an interdisciplinary agenda for inclusion that we can revisit and revise in the years to come.

Towards Inclusive Tech reflects the spirit of UC Berkeley: serve the public (in all its diversity), try new things (even if there’s a risk of failure), and engage across multiple disciplines (integrating research from many fields, from psychology and sociology to organizational behavior and information management.)
