Alumni in Residence Program
Share your journey. Inspire the next generation of I School leaders.
What is the Alumni in Residence Program?
The UC Berkeley School of Information Alumni in Residence Program connects our accomplished alumni with current master’s students for one-on-one “on demand” mentoring conversations. As a participant in this program, you’ll have the opportunity to share your career story, answer questions about your industry and path, and provide real-world perspectives to help students navigate their professional goals and career transitions.
This flexible program allows you to set your own schedule for virtual or in-person office hours, making it easy to give back in a way that fits your availability.
How It Works
Sign Up: Use the self-service web portal to complete your mentor profile and decide which topics you’re comfortable covering in these career conversations.
Set Your Availability: Choose a time commitment that works for you (from a few hours to a few days each semester).
Connect with Students: Meet one-on-one online or in person to answer questions, offer advice, and share insights from your own experience.
Stay Engaged: Join our growing network of alumni mentors and be part of a community dedicated to supporting the next generation of I School leaders.
Why Participate?
Serving as an Alumni in Residence is more than giving advice; it’s an investment in the future of the I School community. Here’s how you’ll benefit:
Give Back with Impact
Your insights can inform students’ career decisions, inspire confidence, and open new possibilities. Set your own schedule, and participate when you can
Expand Your Network and Stay Connected to the I School
Engage with talented students and other alumni across diverse fields like UX, data science, product management, AI, policy, and more
Strengthen Your Professional Brand
Share your expertise and position yourself as a thought leader and mentor in your industry
Who Should Join?
We welcome alumni from all industries and career stages, whether you’ve just graduated or have decades of experience. If you’re enthusiastic about sharing your story and helping students explore career possibilities, we’d love to have you.
Time Commitment
The program is designed to be flexible:
Frequency: You set and update your own calendar availability; we just ask that you have some recurring time set aside on your calendar for meetings. If your availability changes, simply update your calendar or remove your profile from the site.
Format: Virtual, in-person, or hybrid — whatever works best for you!
Structure: Depending on topics you’re comfortable covering, these meetings could include things like: informational conversations about industry or roles, job searching or interview advice, personal branding, or navigating career transitions and grad school.
