Senior Director of External Affairs

The School of Information seeks a senior director of external affairs to lead the School’s marketing, communications, fundraising, alumni relations, and career services.

Key Responsibilities

30% — Marketing and Communications

Administers programs to promote the I School to prospective students, the general public and the campus community. Working through subordinate staff and vendors, oversees all aspects of marketing and communications for the School, including but not limited to print and web communications, social media public relations, SEO marketing and outreach. Takes the lead in promoting the I School, focusing on its four degree programs and faculty research. Establishes and maintains contacts with internal and external marketing professionals and vendors such as internet resources, artists, designers, photographers, advertising representatives, and media contacts. Directly supervises the Associate Director of Communications and provides direction and insight into the design and implementation of a variety of communication pieces in a variety of mediums, including written, visual and electronic communications. Advises and consults with I School colleagues regarding all aspects of I School communications and marketing. Uses strong communications strategies that effectively deliver the desired messages for development and fundraising, recruitment, student affairs, and faculty and student research.

20% — Fundraising

Manages a comprehensive fundraising program for the I School. In close collaboration with the School’s professional fundraising staff, manages fundraising programs and strategies to successfully meet predetermined goals and objectives. This includes identification, cultivation and solicitation plans for donors and donor prospects in collaboration with UDAR and subordinate staff. Oversees the preparation of fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects. May manage their own portfolio of 5-10 legacy donors and major gift prospects in conjunction with UDAR. Serves on the Campaign Management Team. Upholds University policies regarding managing prospects. Oversees the prospect portfolio of each of the fundraising staff. Supervises gift administration and donor stewardship for the School of Information.

15% — Alumni Relations

With input from relevant staff, develops a strategic alumni plan to identifying, building, nurturing and maintaining effective relationships with alumni and other key constituencies. Alumni activities include communication, regional programs, class activities, and reunions. Builds and maintains excellent working relationships with key internal and external partners and develops opportunities to showcase the School while serving as a strong advocate for the I School's goals and objectives.

15% — Staff Management

Selects, trains, leads, directs, and motivates staff, taking corrective action as necessary.

10% — Career Services

Working closely with the Director of Career Services & Alumni Relations, oversees I School career services, including support for internship searches and job searches, for graduate students in all degree programs and recent alumni. Directs employer and industry relations. Provides guidance for the Director of Career Services & Alumni Relations on complex issues.

10% — Finance and Budget

Responsible for developing, managing and implementing budgets for managed functions. This may include, but is not limited to alumni relations, career services, marketing and communications, media buys, special events, and conferences.

    Required Qualifications

    • Strong analytical and negotiation skills and political acumen.

    • Management experience, including personnel and budget administration, and advanced skill in implementing effective personnel and budget operations and practices.

    • Strong skills in advocating for and representing an institution to its various publics.

    • Ability to balance constituency needs with institutional needs, such as by designing solutions or strategies to achieve consensus.

    • Thorough knowledge of current marketing trends and best practices, including new and emerging strategies and technologies.

    • Leadership and management experience, including the ability to direct, mentor, evaluate, and motivate staff.

    • Working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Thorough knowledge of the campus, including short and long range strategic plans, vision, goals, objectives, infrastructure, programs, achievements, and awards.

    • Experience working with alumni and other key constituencies for an educational or similar institution, including their composition and primary goals and objectives.

    • Experience with UC Berkeley programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.

    • Experience managing high-profile events and media activities.

    • Ability to develop, design, and implement creative promotional and advertising strategies.

    • Minimum educations requirements include a Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

    • CFRE, CSPG or other certifications or advanced philanthropic training desired.

    About the School of Information

    The School of Information (I School) advances knowledge and practice everywhere humans interact with digital technologies. Through interdisciplinary research and teaching we are committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility while preserving security and privacy. Our faculty conduct research in human-computer interaction (HCI), security and privacy, applied data science, and technology in developing regions.

    We currently offer three professional master's degrees and an academic doctoral degree. Our Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) program trains students for careers as information professionals and emphasizes project-based learning. Our Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) program is an online degree designed for working professionals with career goals in the emerging field of data science. The newly launched Master of Information and Cybersecurity (MICS), also offered online, offers a holistic approach to cybersecurity and prepares students for professional careers in cybersecurity.
