Ph.D. Student

Degrees

MIMS, UC Berkeley, 2006; B.A., political science and sociology, UC Irvine, 1994

Research Interests

My Ph.D. research focuses on information privacy and the Internet — what you tell about yourself, what you don’t tell, and what you tell without knowing. But I’m also interested in surveillance of public places and its impact on human behavior — for example, traffic cameras; human-computer interaction; and ubiquitous computing that is built into the environment — “smart” technology applications and the “home of the future.”

I School Mentorship Opportunities

I work closely with a professor whose primary work is on privacy and surveillance. She’s gotten me involved with several fascinating projects, including a review of San Francisco’s public surveillance camera system, one of the first evaluations of its kind in the United States.

Why I like the I School Community

The I School attracts people who don’t want to be put in a box. Ph.D. students have diverse interests and talents that intersect to offer a rich and enlightening perspective. There’s no rigid way to pursue an I School education. If you like options, this is the place for you.
