Peter Lyman, professor emeritus and former university librarian, dies at 66

Peter Lyman, former university librarian and professor emeritus at the School of Information, has died. Professor Lyman passed away at his home on Monday, July 2 after a long illness.

Professor Lyman came to Berkeley in 1994 as the university librarian and joined the faculty of the School of Information in the same year. Lyman received his B.A. from Stanford University in philosophy, M.A. from Berkeley in political science, and Ph.D. in political science from Stanford.

Professor Lyman is survived by his wife Barrie, son Andrew and daughter Abby, sister Cynthia, daughter-in-law Faria and his two grandchildren.

A campus memorial service has been planned for Tuesday, September 11 at 5 pm in the Morrison Room, Doe Library.

The School of Information has created an online memorial for Peter where people can share their thoughts. Some of Peter's friends and family have also compiled a book of pictures and remembrances of Peter which can be previewed and ordered online.

Those wanting to honor Peter Lyman's memory are invited to contribute to the newly established Peter Lyman Graduate Fellowship in New Media. Checks made out to the UC Berkeley Foundation can be sent to the following address:
