Colleges, Ad Firms Hustle To Fill Talent Void In Data Science

Data scientists are fueling the growth of the ad-tech industry, as well as many other industries. Straddling art and science, data science requires a solid understanding of machine learning, computing and algorithms, in addition to strong problem-solving and communication skills.

The other thing about data scientists: There's not enough of them.

In order to meet employment demand, the United States must increase the number of graduates with these skills by approximately 60%, according to a report by McKinsey Global Institute....

The University of California at Berkeley is experimenting with a new online master’s degree in information and data science. Starting January 2014, students enrolled in the program will learn how to analyze millions of rows of data and learn skills in machine learning, data visualization, database analysis and data security.

The purpose of the degree is to give students a broad exposure to working with data, explained Berkeley professor and School of Information Dean AnnaLee Saxenian, who is spearheading the program....
