'Open' government vow may be undone by red ink

Remember President Obama's vow, in his inaugural speech, to usher in an era of "open and transparent" government?

It's taken a couple of hits of late.

A White House award ceremony last week honoring his "commitment to transparency" was closed to the press, to the surprise and chagrin of the open government organizations that had joined together to present the award. One of the attendees called the press ban "baffling."...

Reports of the initiative's demise were the subject of much discussion at the Data 2.0 conference in San Francisco on Monday (wwwdata2con.com).

Keynote speaker Vivek Wadhwa, a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley's School of Information, dismissed the reports, saying "it definitely wasn't closing," according to a conference attendee. Wadhwa said he based his belief on "conversations with Vivek Kundra and other government officials," and that Congress' numbers were "just an opening shot in negotiations."

However, nongovernmental data mavens, some of them at the Data 2.0 conference, are standing by, just in case....
