SF Police Chief Pushing For More Surveillance After Times Square Bomb Scare

In the wake of the Times Square bomb plot, San Francisco's police chief said that it may be worth considering whether more surveillance cameras here might prevent an attack from happening....

"Chicago has more cameras than any other US city; New York is probably second. And despite that you still see crimes like this occur," said UC Berkeley researcher [and School of Information doctoral student] Jennifer King.

King co-authored a 2009 study that found that surveillance cameras in San Francisco's high crime neighborhoods are preventing some petty crimes, but do little to prevent violence. Police aren't allowed to to monitor the footage in real time. "There are certainly people who thought that what needed to happen with the camera system was to have people view the cameras live at all times. That isn't necessarily the solution," said King....
