Patent Reform: Lessons Learned and What's Next for Startups
What does the recent battle for patent reform mean for startups and for the future of tech policy?
Julie Samuels is executive director and president of the board of Engine, a young and influential advocacy group working to ensure startups have a voice in D.C. Through policy analysis, economic research, and close relationships with policymakers and startups, Engine is helping to elevate the interests of technology entrepreneurship in American policy.
Julie will give an overview of the recent battle in Washington for patent reform and talk about lessons learned. She'll discuss what the battle means for technology and startup policy going forward — and explain why startups and businesses need to stay involved in the fight for change in D.C.
Julie Samuels is executive director and president of the board of Engine, a nonprofit that supports the growth of technology entrepreneurship through economic research, policy analysis, and advocacy on local and national issues. Engine works closely with policymakers and startups to ensure the entrepreneurs have a voice in D.C. Samuels is a frequent commentator on tech and policy issues for national media, particularly in the patent space. She has also filed briefs with the Supreme Court and testified before congressional committees.
Before joining Engine, Samuels was a senior staff attorney and the Mark Cuban Chair to Eliminate Stupid Patents at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Previously, she litigated intellectual property and entertainment cases in Chicago at Loeb & Loeb and Sonnenschein. Before becoming a lawyer, Julie worked at the Media Coalition in New York as a legislative assistant, at the National Journal in D.C. as an assistant editor, and at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) in Champaign, IL. Julie earned her J.D. from Vanderbilt University and her B.S. in journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
