Enrolling in I School Courses

Summer Session

Summer sessions courses are open to all community members, as well as Berkeley students, through the normal summer session enrollment.

UC Berkeley Students

Any UC Berkeley student is welcome to enroll in courses at the School of Information during the fall and spring semesters, subject to enrollment restrictions and prerequisites.

Community Members

Community members (non–UC Berkeley students, including students from other institutions) may enroll in individual I School courses during the Fall and Spring semesters through the UC Berkeley Extension concurrent enrollment program, subject to the following restrictions:

• Concurrent enrollment is available on a space-available basis only.
• Concurrent enrollment requires approval of the course instructor and the school administration.
• Concurrent enrollment is available for regularly-scheduled courses only; independent study courses are not allowed.
• Concurrent Enrollment students are not eligible to hold academic student appointments (GSR, GSI, Tutor or Reader positions).

Full-time Students

Non–UC Berkeley students who wish to apply for classes through concurrent enrollment on a full-time basis (12 or more units) must be formally invited by the School of Information. To be considered for such an invitation, we require:

• One academic letter of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should be mailed by the recommender directly to the School of Information in their original sealed envelopes.
• Transcripts of your education so far showing that you have (or will have) the equivalent of an undergraduate university degree. Submit official transcripts or academic records for all university-level studies you have completed and work in progress.
• A letter from your advisor at your home institution stating that your current program approves you to take courses at the School of Information.
• For international students: Recent TOEFL score, unless your university degree was from a university in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, or the English-speaking provinces of Canada. For details on acceptable TOEFL scores, please review http://www.ischool.berkeley.edu/admissions/faq#TOEFL

We strongly recommend that you not take more than three or four courses. Our invitation only applies to regularly scheduled courses in the School of Information and not to other courses on the Berkeley campus.
