Career Advisor (Part-Time)

The Career Advisor will provide experienced/executive level, individually tailored virtual career coaching/advising to students in the Master of Information & Data Science (MIDS) program interested in advancing their current careers and/or making career changes. This will include general advice based on expert knowledge of the job market for data science/analytics as well as networking suggestions within the I School community (fellow students, faculty, alumni) and the broader data science community or in various industries of interest.

As time and expertise allows, this position will participate in developing and leading webinar training presentations for students in various areas, e.g., building your own brand, LinkedIn basics, networking, defining your career goals, etc.

The MIDS students are unique in that they are typically experienced professionals with over seven years of previous work experience. Specialized coaching is needed to effectively work with these students to gain clarity around career objectives and to develop the competencies needed to flourish. A deep expertise in the technology job market, specifically data science / analytics, is essential to assist students in their professional goals.

I School career services is currently dedicating an average of 2–3 hours per week for one-on-one MIDS student advising. The time commitment required for advising is expected to increase as graduation dates approach, the program size grows, and we begin to more broadly advertise this service.

Responsibilities

  • Provides one-on-one, individually tailored and client-driven career coaching/advising to students interested in advancing their current careers and/or making career changes. Empowers students in developing and working towards achieving their career goals. This may include assisting students in conducting their own self-assessments, creating their “personal brand”, gaining information around various career pathways, and networking. Provides students with general advice based on his/her expert knowledge of the job market for data science/analytics and also suggests methods of networking within the I School community (fellow students, faculty, alumni) as well as within the broader data science community and various industries of interest.

  • Maintains detailed metrics of student advising sessions and outcomes; this may include utilizing the I School student tracking system in Salesforce.

  • As time and expertise allows, participates in webinar training presentations for students in various areas, e.g., building your own brand, LinkedIn basics, networking, defining your career goals, etc.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of career development theories and coaching strategies.

  • Excellent knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; and learning and motivation.

  • Advanced knowledge of career decision making, and job search techniques.

  • Advanced knowledge of technology industry job market, specifically in the area of data science and analytics.

  • Working knowledge of various industries interested in data science and analytics, including healthcare, finance, consulting, retail, etc.

  • Detailed knowledge of hiring practices and recruiting/ staffing methods for mid to senior career professionals as well as employment trends.

  • Advanced knowledge of LinkedIn and other social media tools.

  • Highly effective problem identification and solving skills, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization skills.

  • Excellent computer skills and the ability to quickly adapt to new software programs and online resources.

  • Excellent judgment in handling sensitive information.

This position has been designated as sensitive and may require a Criminal Background Check. We reserve the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.

Contract Length

This is a six-month temporary contract position.  Contract positions may be extended or terminated based on operational demand.

This position requires 5–10 hours per week (12.5%–25% time).

Contract will begin at the end of March and last through September 30th. At such time, metrics (e.g., student satisfaction, student demand, career outcomes) will be used to evaluate possible extension of contract.

Other Information

As the MIDS degree is an online degree for working professionals, the Career Advisor would be expected to work remotely and conduct advising sessions via Skype, phone, and/or the I School Virtual Classroom (ISVC) ecosystem (Adobe Connect). Advising sessions should be scheduled via Google calendar (or similar) and metrics kept via Google Docs and/or Salesforce.

The Career Advisor would be invited (but not required) to visit the I School campus location to participate in community events, such as the MIDS Immersion program.
