Bio

Manuel Castells is Professor Emeritus of City & Regional Planning and Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is, as well, the Wallis Annenberg Chair Professor of Communication Technology and Society at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles; Research Professor of Information Society at the Open University of Catalonia in Barcelona; and the Marvin and Joanne Grossman Distinguished Visiting Professor of Technology and Society at MIT. He was, from 1979 to 2003, Professor of City and Regional Planning and Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a Fellow of the European Academy, the Spanish Royal Academy of Economics, and the British Academy. He has received 15 honorary doctorates from universities around the world, and has been knighted by several countries.

Among other appointments, he has been a member of the United Nations Secretary General's Advisory Council on Information and Communication Technology. He is currently a member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council, the research funding institution of the European Union. His trilogy, The Information Age: Economy, Society, and Culture (Blackwell 1996-2003), has been translated into 22 languages. His most recent books are The Internet Galaxy (Oxford, 2001), The Information Society and the Welfare State. The Finnish Model (Oxford, 2002, co-author), and more recently, Mobile Communication and Society. A Global Perspective (co-author), to be published by MIT Press in November 2006.
